Research on Healthy Aging

<!-- Advert Text -->The Department of Epidemiology at Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, is a renowned research and training center. The institute is particularly well recognized for its large population-based studies of determinants of disease. A new focus of the Department is research on healthy aging. This research will be conducted largely in the Rotterdam Study, a prospective cohort study that started in 1990 in a suburb of Rotterdam, among 10,994, men and women aged 55 and over.

Project: Most societies around the world are facing ageing populations and intense demographic redistribution. However, these increases in longevity are not always accompanied by significant improvements in health and quality of life of older people. To determine how to advance healthy ageing and what risk factors are associated with well-being in older age, we begin the following project through a 2 year Post Doctoral position funded by Unilever Corporate Research:
"The Healthy Ageing Phenotype: A study on trajectories of individuals ageing healthily". This project starts with a global perspective of ageing: defining the healthy ageing phenotype. We hypothesize that healthy aging is the result of a dynamic and malleable process characterized by the absence of certain conditions and the presence of others. Secondly, we aim to identify the factors that best predict the trajectory of those that achieve and maintain healthy aging. In particular, we hypothesize that three factors are crucial contributors to achieving and preserving healthy aging. These factors are adequate glycemic control, halting the progression of atherosclerosis and retaining psychological well-being. How these factors interact and how can they be attained are some of the questions investigated. A short project description can be found on
www.epib.nl.

Position description: You will be responsible for the conduct of the project and will analyze the data from the Rotterdam Study together with PhD students and a multidisciplinary group of senior researchers. The results of this research are published in international scientific journals.
